[HAM] I wish an inflatable Leslie !!!!nestor at movicommerce.cjb.net nestor at movicommerce.cjb.netTue Nov 11 17:34:40 CST 2003
Hello folks, Seeking the truthful sound for almost 40 years !!! To introduce myself let me say that I feel myself like sorta dinosaur as I began with a Philips Philicorda in the early 60's ( I was a teen then) Tt wasn't until 1969 that I bought something I thought it would be resembling the real thing......a Farfisa Fast 5 with two big speakers units and despite Farfisa label it was a Leslie original unit inside). It could scream a bit like thos legendary "With a shade of pale" of Deep Purple band in the early 70's By the way...I received a letter from former European "leslie" clone builder (AmplificazioniLombardi.it) remembeing that they were building that and probably making it "custom ordering" There is a picture of Brian Auger in their site. I have to confess to be and Hammond admirer for decades.....and I feel that probably here I am near "the revelation of some of the mysteries "........ :) My project is before going to the real thing I need a Leslie with REAL rotor drum speaker for the bass something lost in the Suzuki new line of Leslies (only rotary horns and no bass cabinet for that) In my opinion the original now pales of envy facing last motion-sound featuring a LowPro cabinet with real rotor drum as woofer. In the meantime to get my project done I have two options: a) a Yamaha LeslieRA-100 used as I didn't found an used Leslie yet for sale in my neighbourhood yet :) b) To chop my Leslie built-in clone in my D-Yahama-80 (it carries 11 pinouts for original Leslie) c) to buy an used one at eBAY. In such way e.g. going to Miami and to taking it back I'd need convert it previously as a "assemblied kit" avoiding a second mortgage just to pay the airfreight from coast to coast. Any help or comments with my project c) as follows ? 1. Bass section : 1.1. A Rotosonic drum (used wood made or a new styrofoam made ) 1.2. If needed a new ferro (Alnico) based Jensen speaker (15") 2. Trebles section At eBAY there are many Leslies (some mint units) but to pay near 1,000 fora good one is out of my budget) I think to buy a cheap or broken Leslie 122/147 and chop it and if needed replacing any of these parts: 2.1. the driver in itself if damaged (e.g. an Atlas PD-60) 2.2. the diaphragm (Ruby one) 2.3 the difussors (plastic ones at GoffProf) 2.4 Crossover 800 Mhz (are there spared ones ?) What my list is lacking a first view would be: a) MOTORS with two speed kit b) a decent cabinet with same measures as the original b) Currency CONVERTER from 110/240 better if dual cycles 50/60 Hz. (to get European voltage also for rod purposes) c) An A/B switch d) external AMP + PREAMP (better yet if it is the original tube on In the meantime I would use a non stock solid-state AMP+ vintage PRE-AMP (tube based) As I will be used first a Korg CX-3 I don't care yet about having complex Leslie pinouts (11 pins) Finally any hint to get unassembly instructions....well.... chopping more the unsassembly....... he I like to get near a "flat cabinet" without destroying rotors , motors or speakers. I would like sorta "inflatable system" to get lighteness in an 7 hours airflight from Miami to home. Thanks for reading this and thanks also to Geoffrey Dairiki of Dairiki.org for recommending this list. Bests, Nestor
